Some boats carry people and things across the water. Today we will make a little boat that stays up on the water and holds things without falling over. Can we do it?
2 - Talk and Share Ideas ~2 mins
How could we make a boat that stays up on the water and holds counters? Share one idea with your partner. Then we will hear a few together.
3 - Make Our Boat ~12 mins
With your partner, make one boat from foil and lolly sticks. You may use a little modelling clay to hold parts together. Remember: sides up, and a space inside for counters.
4 - Float and Add Counters ~6 mins
We take turns at the water trays. When it is your turn, put your boat on the water gently, then add counters one by one into the middle, and stop as soon as the boat tips or water comes in.
While you are waiting at your tray, watch the boat that is being tested and count out loud with everyone else, so you all know how many it held.
5 - Change One Thing ~5 mins
Dry your boat on a towel at your table.
Now change your boat one way. You choose which one:
- turn the sides up higher
- make the floor wider and flatter
- move the lolly stick to a different place
Then take it back to the water and count the counters again.
