Many classes have already counted the languages in the room. Today we go further: where did each one come from, and how did it get here?
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Count the languages this class actually holds
- Spot introduction phrases across several languages
- Talk about how people moving countries change the languages a place speaks
Watch as we go along each row on the board. Listen to one introduction idea at a time, then say it back together. Which ones sound almost like cousins?
Now you get four short clips, and they are a little trickier than the easiest ones, so listen carefully because each one plays just once. When you think you know which language it is, put your hand up quietly rather than calling out, so that nobody else's guess is spoiled. Then we reveal the answer together, along with the sound or rhythm that gave that language away.
Open your copy. At the top of the page, copy today's three introduction ideas:
- What's your name?
- My name is...
- Where are you from?
Under that, write the languages this class holds, with a number beside each for how many people know a word of it.
You each get a bingo card. Cross off a square when you hear that introduction idea. First full line calls Bingo!
